The Performing Arts Group of Estacada creates opportunities for community participation in the performing arts.
How PAGE Was Born
In 2001, Kate Hawkes of ART approached the Estacada Area Arts Commission as being a recipient of an NEA (National Education Association) grant to bring theater skills to a rural underserved area. The EAAC accepted and assists PAGE by publicizing the community theater projects.
Estacada Together, a local arts-presenting, non-profit organization, has also taken on the role of PAGE's sponsor and acts as the fiscal agent for this organization.
Over twenty persons ages 8-53 participated in creating an original script, The Chair Wasn't There, attending workshops on a multitude of stagecrafts, designing the playbill and marketing the event in conjunction with the EAAC.
Enthusiasm for community theater among its new members was high, and the group agreed to continue without the assistance of the NEA. Kate Hawkes continued to advise and be a resource for workshop instructors. PAGE held weekly theater classes, script writing and improv nights, and presented a performance of short skits, Theater Showcase, as their annual spring performance.
The group then decided to perform a classic full length play. They chose You Can't Take it With You, complete with pyrotechnics and tax collectors. It was well received. It was followed by two original scripts, Jake & Roscoe's Masterpiece Theater in 2005 and No Attachments in 2006.
Following performances include Room Service in 2007, Harvey in 2008, On the Razzle in 2009, and Can We Talk? (a combination of original and previously published works) in 2010 (click here to read an article about it). 2011's production will be Pride and Prejudice.
Part of PAGE's mission is to support all age groups and talents. Many times roles of older characters are given to younger actors, there is occasional gender swapping and whenever possible live music is included showcasing the musical talents of some cast members.
